holiday gift giving - picture books & bookplates

I'm starting to think about holiday gifts and one of my favorite gifts to give, or get, is a picture book. My list of favorites is long, but here are a few I've purchased already:

Little Beauty
by Anthony Browne
A love story...and because any Anthony Browne is a beautiful, mysterious adventure.

Chrysanthemum
by Kevin Henkes
Because I once wished my name was Jane and every child has a moment when they want to wish away some fabulously embarrassing thing that they'll be thankful for later.

Higglety Pigglety Pop! Or, There Must Be More to Life
by Maurice Sendak
A lesser known Sendaak book - A terrier living the dream takes off in search of what's missing.

A book is a wonderful gift alone, but to add that special something consider adding a book plate, or a handmade bookmark. I love book plates; you can add the recipient's name and place one at the front of the book, or give custom book plates for their library. I'm happy to say they seem to be making a comeback and you can find a large selection on line.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Personalized Vintage Blue Bird Bookplates

Bookplate (floral) - pack of 9 by Milkshake crafts

  1. Love, love, love the book "The Sea Serpent and Me" (http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Serpent-Me-Dashka-Slater/dp/0618723943). Wonderful illustrations and a beautiful story that brings tears to my eyes. Also, I make bookplates and I do find that many people (too many!) have no idea what they are. Great gift ideas, Rosemary! (I also love Chrysanthemum.)

  5. We are huge Pigeon fans.
The other day we were at the park eating a snack and a flock of pigeons started creeping close looking for crumbs, U pointed to one and said, "He's definitely the one that wants a hot dog party."

  6. Higglety Pigglety Pop is one of my childhood all-time favorites. I so related to feeling small in a very big world, and adored the illustrations as a child and now as an adult. Thank you for brushing off the dust of one of my childhood treasures...I enjoy your blog and website immensely. Hope you are enjoying Spring around the bend.
